PMMA (Polymethyl Methacrylate) is a transparent polymer, commonly known as acrylic or plexiglass, with excellent optical properties, weather resistance, and processability. It is widely used in various fields such as architecture, optics, and healthcare.

Basic definition and chemical structure

The chemical name of PMMA is Polymethyl Methacrylate, which is formed through radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer. Its molecular formula is (C₅H₈O₂)ₙ. Its main chain consists of carbon-carbon single bond structures, and the side groups contain methyl methacrylate, endowing the material with high transparency and thermoplasticity.

    1. Optical performance: The light transmittance is as high as 92%, surpassing that of ordinary glass (85%). With a UV transmittance of 73%, it is suitable for optical lenses, light guide plates, and more.

    2. Mechanical properties: The tensile strength is approximately 53-59 MPa, but the material is relatively brittle and requires rubber modification to enhance its toughness.

    3. Weather resistance: The outdoor service life exceeds 10 years, with resistance to yellowing and UV aging.
